Alex - good article, but you've got the Fitzgerald quote completely wrong: it expresses precisely the opposite idea to the naive cycle of hope in a messianic figure leading to disappointment. Fitzgerald depicts an existential paradox: to simultaneously acknowledge the inevitable futility of action as one exerts oneself as strenously as possible to prove the opposite. I would suggest that only a fraction of people voting / rooting for Obama fall into this category, and that for most of them the hopes engendered by his campaign are very real. Nick

come on Alex are you seriously telling me having links with Reverend Wright - which incidentally Mccain did not push more about- i dont know why -much better than the pathetic ayers attack -remember this is a guy who said america deserved 9/11 , made anti semitic remarks and said that the american government created aids - and this guy was a close friend of obama-lack of judgement definitely .

As for campaign finance reform - it was deeply dishonest - especially since apparently obama was meant to represent change-saying he would meet these rules and then not -effectively half buying the election-mccain who stuck to campaign finance rules was never going to meet obama's money -because on campaign finance he chose the path of change ( funny that obama didn't ) .

As for obama well im pro free trade and he's anti free trade- unfortunately fulling the protectionist democrat crowd , he was proved wrong on the iraq troop surge- and now wants to do something similar in afghanistan heaven forbid he wont call it a troop surge. Having said that mccain sold his principles when he appointed the nutter aka sarah palin-or rather forced on him he wanted to pick joe lieberman or tom ridge-but wasn't allowed to -as the GOP said if he did this , he would lose all their money.

hope, change it's just words - it means nothing - wheres the beef obama - oh and another thing i couldn't care if he's black or white - and it's sickening that the media have made such a big deal of him being black - it shouldn't matter.

oh and negative campaigning - i work for help the aged in the summer, so i have some background on this -what about all the ageism thrown at mccain by the obama camp -hardly honourable.

I totally agree with you , that messiah like treatment of the media of obama was stupid , and meant he couldn't be self critical of his own policies.

So, four days after the country drank the Kool Aid and elected "the One", voices of reason are coming forth? Where was this reasoned prose when the campaign was in full tilt? I believe that Alex is trying to close the door long after the cow has left the barn. Having been a supporter of McCain, it will be indeed a pleaure to see reality set in for all the ObamaNation type citizens.
